The name "tumi" comes from the Mochica language and means "sea lion". According to legend, the first Moche saw these animals as a divine sign indicating where to settle, and thus the word tumi became associated with all things divine . The figure on the handle represents Naylamp, the mythical hero founder of the Sicán culture who, after death, transformed into a bird-man and flew into the sky .
The tumi is now a national symbol of Peru . In ancient times it was used for ceremonial sacrifices, skull trepanations and as an emblem of rank and authority .
