Since the dawn of time, the egg has been a source of inspiration for philosophers and artists in the creation of sculptures, paintings and jewels. It is a symbol of life and rebirth. Tradition provides for the gift and exchange of real chicken eggs, in marble, in materials and precious stones, decorated or carved and, in recent times, also in chocolate to wish prosperity.
The egg, with its perfect shape, without edges, without a beginning and without an end, is also a sacred symbol widely used to represent life, rebirth, fecundity and resurrection.
The symbolism is due to the function of preserving and ensuring the permanence of life within it which, even in the form, recalls the womb.
The custom of giving eggs to celebrate the beginning of spring was very common in ancient times; it was handed down, already 4000 years ago, by the Persians, then by the Egyptians and the Greeks. On the occasion of spring festivities and ceremonies, eggs were exchanged for rites for life, fecundity and the rebirth of nature.
With the advent of Christianity, the egg, resembling a stone and apparently lifeless, is associated with the stone tomb in which Jesus was buried: both contain a life ready to be born and to go out. As the chick is born and comes out of the egg shell, so Christ was risen and came out of the tomb. The egg thus becomes a symbol of the passage from death to new life and hope in the future resurrection of believers. The symbolism was reinforced by the obligation of abstinence from meat during Lent, until the twentieth century even eggs and dairy products were prohibited. The breeders thus found themselves with eggs that they could neither eat nor sell; so began to spread the custom of boiling them to make them firm, painting them with sacred colors and symbols and taking them to the Church for blessing. It is currently the quintessential symbol of Easter.
