Black Star Diopside – Origin and Properties
Black Star Diopside is a fascinating and mysterious gemstone, famous for its distinctive four-pointed star effect (asterism), visible under a direct light source. This phenomenon is due to the orientation of fibrous inclusions (often magnetite or other ferrous material) naturally present in the stone.
🌍 Origin
The main sources of extraction of Black Star Diopside are:
India (the most renowned, especially in the state of Tamil Nadu)
Russia, Sri Lanka In smaller quantities also in Burma and Brazil
💎 Appearance and characteristics
Color: deep black, sometimes with very dark green reflections
Optical effect: 4-pointed star visible with direct light (more common than the rare 6-pointed effect)
Cut: always cabochon, necessary to highlight the asterism
Hardness: 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale (relatively delicate, must be handled with care)
