The Niello technique
Niello is an ancient goldsmithing technique that consists of engraving a design on the silver surface and filling the grooves with a black metallic alloy. This alloy is a mixture of sulphur, copper and silver. The engraved metal is filled with this alloy ground into powder, which is then melted at low temperature. Once cooled, the surface is polished and burnished, making the black design stand out against the bright silver.

This technique, already known in ancient times and perfected in 15th-century Italy, is prized for its ability to create sharp contrasts and precise details. Niello is not a vitreous enamel, but a metallic alloy: for this reason it is more resistant and does not chip easily. Today, niello is a niche technique, practised by a few artisans who preserve ancient knowledge.
