"Moonstone" is a variety of feldspar, a mineral belonging to the tectosilicate group. The term "rainbow" associated with moonstone indicates a particular variety that displays an iridescent play of colors, often similar to the colors of the rainbow. The defining characteristic of rainbow moonstone is its play of iridescent colors. This phenomenon, called adularescence, is caused by the scattering of light through microscopic inclusions of other minerals within the stone.
Moonstone can feature a variety of colors, including shades of blue, white, yellow, green, and peach. The most common color is flattering blue.
The hardness of moonstone is moderate, ranging from 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. This means it is quite durable, but can get scratched by harder materials.
Rainbow moonstone can range in transparency from clear to opaque.
Rainbow moonstones are often mined from places like Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, and Australia.
In many traditions, moonstone is considered a stone with metaphysical properties. It is believed to promote intuition, spirituality and personal growth. Some people believe that it also has healing properties and can positively affect emotions.
