Dayak Tribal Statue in Ironwood from Borneo – Ancestor Protector Spirit

Discover the authenticity and spirituality of Borneo tribal art with this extraordinary wooden statue, created by the Dayak Kalimantan people in the Mahakam River region of eastern Borneo. This is a unique and antique piece, purchased in 1983 in Malaysian Borneo from a local collector, who had preserved this precious work for over 40 years.

Dayak Culture and Ancestor Worship

The Dayak are the indigenous peoples of Borneo, guardians of ancient rainforests. Their traditional religion is animism, with a deep cult of ancestors, considered protectors of the community and intermediaries between the world of the living and the spirit world. This statue represents a male ancestral spirit, a guardian who watched over the house and its inhabitants. It was traditionally placed outside, at the entrance of villages or houses, to ward off evil spirits and protect the community.

Ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri)

Made of ironwood, scientifically Eusideroxylon zwageri, one of the hardest and most precious woods in the world. Endemic to Borneo, this wood is so resistant it's called "iron". It contains natural oils that make it immune to insects and rot, ensuring exceptional longevity. Today it is a protected species, and authentic statues like this are increasingly rare.

The seated position, hands on knees and facial expression reflect the wisdom and authority of the ancestor. A work that carries the history, energy and spirituality of the Dayak people.
