Bhaiṣajyaguru, "Master of Medicine from the Lapis Lazuli Light", also known as Medicine Buddha or Master of Cures, is the Buddha who represents medicine and its healing power.
Bhaisajyaguru is typically represented seated in the lotus position, wearing monastic robes. His body is lapis lazuli blue.
In his left hand, lying in his lap in the dhyanimudra (lit. "Gesture of meditation"), he holds a bowl for remedies, while with his right he performs the varadamudra, "Gesture of the gift".
Meditating on the Medicine Buddha, the Supreme Healer (or Sangye Menla in Tibetan) is not only a very powerful method to heal and increase one's own and others' healing abilities, but also to overcome the inner diseases of affection, hatred, and ignorance. He is therefore highly revered for relieving physical and mental illness and suffering. In Tibetan Buddhism the power of the Medicine Buddha is the most powerful blessing to heal and awaken the innate healing wisdom that is present in every individual.

The right hand is placed at the bottom in the "welcoming gesture" (varadamudrā) and holds a branch with the fruit of the myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica, sans. Harītakī) whose juice is a laxative. In his left hand he holds a mortar to prepare the medicines. He is also referred to as Bhaisajyaguruvaidūryaprabha, "Lapis Lazuli Light Medicine Buddha" due to his deep blue skin color.
