Saraswati is a Hindu deity associated with knowledge, wisdom, music, art and rhetoric. She is often depicted as a beautiful woman dressed in white sitting on a lotus or water lily, playing a musical instrument called a veena. Saraswati is also associated with rivers and water, symbols of purification and continuous flow of knowledge.
In Hindu mythology, Saraswati is the consort of Brahma, the creator god, and together they are considered the parents of knowledge and creation. She is especially revered during the festival of Basant Panchami, when her contribution to knowledge and art is celebrated. In many schools and educational institutions of India, a worship ceremony is done to invoke her blessings for her success in studies and creative pursuits.
