On the front of the medal is the depiction of Saint Benedict of Nursia in monastic robes, holding the Cross in his right hand (Christian and Salvation symbol par excellence) and an open book in his left hand, representing the Rule.
On the sides of the saint two significant episodes of his life are remembered, referred to in the hagiography that Pope Gregory the Great wrote of Pope Gregory the Great in the Dialogues: on his right a cup with a snake and on his left a loaf and a crow.
On the sides of the figure of St. Benedict, above the cup and the crow, are the words "Crux S [ancti] Patris Benedicti" ("Cross of the holy father Benedict"). All around the medal runs the inscription "Eius in obitu n [ost] ro praesentia muniamur" ("Defend us in our death with the presence of him"), which refers to the role recognized to St. Benedict in the "happy death". At the foot of the saint there is the inscription "ex S M Casino MDCCCLXXX" (from Santo Monte Cassino 1880), which commemorates, in the year of the Jubilee 1880, the 1400th anniversary of the birth of St. Benedict (480).
