Vishnu is one of the main deities of the Hindu religion and is part of the divine Trinity (Trimurti) together with Brahma and Shiva. He is considered the god of preservation and protection of the universe. His main role is to maintain cosmic order (dharma) and protect the world from evil and chaos.

Vishnu is often depicted as a noble and benevolent being, with skin that can be blue or green, a symbol of his divine and universal nature. Usually, he has four arms that represent control over all directions and elements of the universe. Each hand holds a distinctive symbol:

1. **Conch (Shankha)**: symbolizes creation and cosmic sound, which awakens universal order and law.
2. **Discus (Chakra)**: represents eternal time and the force that destroys evil.
3. **Mace (Gada)**: symbolizes strength and protection against evil.
4. **Lotus Flower (Padma)**: Represents purity, beauty and perfection.

Vishnu is also often depicted lying on a cosmic serpent, called **Ananta** or **Sesha**, symbol of infinity, on the surface of the primordial waters, which represent the origin of the universe.

Vishnu is famous for his ten incarnations (Dasavatara), which manifest whenever the cosmic balance is threatened by demons or evil forces. The ten incarnations of Vishnu are:

1. **Matsya** (the fish)
2. **Kurma** (the tortoise)
3. **Varaha** (the boar)
4. **Narasimha** (the lion-man)
5. **Vamana** (the dwarf)
6. **Parashurama** (the man with the axe)
7. **Rama** (the hero of the Ramayana epic)
8. **Krishna** (one of the most revered, protagonist of the Mahabharata and Bhagavad Gita)
9. **Buddha** (the enlightened one, in some Hindu traditions)
10. **Kalki** (the future incarnation, yet to come)

Theological Significance
In theological terms, Vishnu is often seen as the deity who represents salvation and divine mercy. Whenever dharma is threatened, Vishnu intervenes in the form of one of his incarnations to restore order and guide humanity towards justice.

Vishnu is worshipped with great devotion in many forms throughout Hinduism, and his stories and legends are recounted in sacred texts such as the **Upanishads**, the **Mahabharata** (which includes the Bhagavad Gita) and the **Ramayana**.
